Although bitcoin's infamous price rise launched it into the mainstream last year, it's hardly a new concept. Wednesday marked the 10th anniversary of a white paper written by Satoshi Nakamoto that detailed for the first time how bitcoin could work.

But something as uncertain as Bitcoin (and cryptocurrency in general) was never going to be smooth sailing. Many tried a cryptographed digital currency before it, and they weren't able to fully crack it. Since Bitcoin became a reality nearly a decade ago, there have been some high highs and some low lows. For some Bitcoin owners, that's part of the appeal.
Crypto company Ripple is giving $50 million to universities including Princeton, MIT, and UCL for blockchain research
Universities involved in the project will be able to apply to Ripple's University Blockchain Research Initiative fund for cash. Some of the $50 million has already been allocated.
