My name is Alex Masters Lecky, I am from Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

I am a millenial, and I started the Cryptonicles community.

TOP 3 Best Bitcoin & Ethereum Exchanges for Beginners: Coinbase, Coinsquare, and Binance Fees and Features Compared

Forward from the founder.

"Best of days to you my fellow disruptor,"
Me being disruptive...

Cryptonicles was something that manifested in an effort to further my understanding of cryptocurrencies, the roles they will play in our evolving world today, and well into the future. Most notably, the role they will play in combatting our $100 trillion costs on climate change (that’s right… an absolutely insane amount of money!) has peaked my interest into these digital assets.

But of course, with the advent of blockchain technology, and the epic surge of value into the global cryptocurrency ecosystem (over half a trillion in a year), I now truly believe that a peak demand scenario (end of fossil fuels) can be achieved worldwide. We will be able to stabilize our climate by taking advantage of blockchain technologies, all while involving people of every culture from around the globe in, in this grand exchange. We can see that slowly, yet surely, cryptocurrencies are becoming more and more efficient, and effective at transferring value. Look at that transaction speed!

Technology gets better, transactions get faster - more value is created.

So let’s get down to it.

If you have NEVER, EVER bought a bitcoin before, this article is for you.

If you already have bitcoins or other cryptocurrencies, you still might learn something - so stay tuned.

I’ve put together the top 3 best exchanges to use in when starting your crypto journey - because this is a journey for everyone. No one knows what’s going to happen to our economy, they just know it’s happening - right now!

Also, if you need any help, feel free to email me.

But hopefully I’ve done a sufficient enough job here to at least get you started.

This landscape of digital assets is confusing sometimes, but this is the direction our world is heading in, so you might as well get a head start.

Here we go!

There are A LOT of exchanges out there, but these are the beasts amongst them.

Coinbase, Coinsquare, and Binance have all proven themselves to be powerhouses in the cryptocurrency markets. So I've put them side by side for you (or one after the other), so that you can choose the best platform for your own investment needs when it comes to growing your digital asset portfolio.

What we will be looking at.

Funding/Payment Methods: There are different ways to pay for digital currencies available.

Fees: Short summation of fees for the exchange.

Purchase and Withdrawal Limits, wait times: It’s important to understand this isn’t your bank, there are limits that need to be respected for this ecosystem to survive (and behaviour).

Currencies (and Wallets) Available: Which coins are being traded? What coins can I buy?

Supported Countries: Who can and cannot use the platform or its features?

Mobile App Available: Yes/No

User Interface: Description + Screenshots

Trade Difficulty: Low difficulty to High

Special Feature: Something neat about the exchange that might catch your eye.

Pros: What positives can you expect from using the exchange.

Cons: Which negatives should you be aware of (don’t worry there aren't too many, but there are still risks).

Investor Level: beginner, intermediate, advanced, expert

Referral Program: Can I share the exchange with others to benefit? Oh yes!

Security: How secure is my money?

Customer Service: Can I get help if I need it?

Personal Rating: My opinion of the exchange out of 10 points!

(Psss. email Alex if you get stuck!)

The word 'coinbase' actually originates from cryptocurrency mining terminology used to describe transactions along the bitcoin ledger that can only be created by a miner, a coinbase transaction (coin + base transaction [mining] = 'coinbase' for us humans). That's a pretty cool tidbit of information that gives this exchange a little flavor, but Coinbase comes in at number one overall for a few reasons.

Aside from being the largest U.S. cryptocurrency exchange, its recognized, most notably, for its shear simplicity and ease of use. This digital currency exchange is headquartered in San Francisco California and was founded in July of 2011 by Brian Armstrong and Fred Ehsram. Through a series of successful investments, the platform reached 1 million users in 2014. Making it one of the largest exchanges to grow and survive the messy birth of the blockchain industry while the crypto markets were still infantile.

In 2016, Coinbase began offering ether (the ethereum Token, ETH) in addition to just Bitcoin (BTC). In October of 2017, they’d announced instantaneous purchasing of bitcoin, ethereum, and litecoin (LTC) for users using U.S. bank accounts. Previously this process took several days - delighting investors greatly. The platform saw a considerably increase in users after the announcement that bitcoin futures were now available for trade on conventional asset exchanges. Currently with a whopping 13 million users, Coinbase sits comfortably amongst some of the largest financial exchanges in the world

Coinbase Funding/Payment Methods:

  • Credit Card (Visa and MasterCard)
  • Debit Card
  • Paypal
  • Wire Transfer
Purchase platform after you sign-up, very straight forward.

The fees for funding apply similarly to fees of exchange. As Coinbase acts more as a digital currency vault, than a trading platform. They act as a huge digital warehouse where you coins are securely kept. Again, a great place for a safe and long term investment into cryptocurrencies.

Coinbase Fees

A beginner's limit of $250 dollars purchase at a time keeps the frenzy in control.

Coinbase doesn’t charge you for housing coin in the wallet it provides (generates) for you, but you will receive a fee for transferring cryptocurrency to a wallet address that is outside of the platform. Remember, this fee is determined by the blockchain community (the miners) , and is simply the necessary cost of doing business with this miraculous technology.

Also, there are standard conversion and exchange rate fees for all countries depending on the threshold of the transaction.

The minimum threshold is $200 USD for the rate of the fee to change. A prorated fee for higher volume exchanges take effect past $200 USD. Anything under $200USD is a flat $5 fee.

Hint: If you want to start with a bang for your buck, make a purchase of JUST under $200USD and you'll save a couple bucks because at $200, the fee is %3.99, or $8, if you live in Canada or the U.S. - quick maths!

See fee details for individual countries below.

Coinbase Purchase, Withdrawal Limits, and Wait times:

There are limitations to money flow with all cryptocurrency platforms at the moment. Because the ecosystem is so new, these exchanges are really the only entities that are preventing things from getting out of control.

In order to prevent fraud, Coinbase has a limit as to how much digital currency can be purchased and sold depending on your account level. You can apply for greater limits as time passes, or simply wire transfer funds directly to your Coinbase account if you are a U.S. investor looking to make a larger order. GDAX, their currency exchange platform, limits currency withdrawals to $10,000 per day. Remember you need to make requests to increase limits, so plan your investments and withdrawals accordingly.

Wait times come and go as the platform is under constant development in order to accommodate the huge influx of customers. Some days it’s really fast, sometimes you’ve got to wait, but again, this platform is great for a beginner who just wants to dip their toes in to the market, or carefully cryptograph a small fortune.

Coinbase Mobile App Available

The Coinbase mobile app is as simple as the web based platform. You'll be buying and selling cryptocurrencies on the go...

Literally - trust me.

Coinbase User Interface

Fast, effective, and very easy to use. I was actually surprised because I am used to seeing trading interfaces that are far more muddled and less intuitive. Coinbase makes everything accessible in a well packaged, seamless investing experience.

Coinbase Trade Difficulty

Trading takes very little time for new investors.

The trade difficulty for Coinbase is VERY LOW (VERY easy to buy Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin instantly). I'd go as far as to say that buying cryptocurrencies on Coinbase is easier than buying anything off of Amazon, and we all know Amazon has perfected the craft of online purchasing. There's only 4 products here, and they are all amazing!

Coinbase Special Feature

Price alerts to get in and out when you want.

Price alerts (get notifications when coins reach a certain price). Coinbase also provides a feature that allows retailers to accept Bitcoin and then immediately sell the Bitcoin in order to reduce exposure to volatility on the exchange.

A VERY powerful feature for businesses, especially online businesses, that are looking for an alternative way to accept payments, and possibly, a different type of customer altogether.

Coinbase Pros

Extremely easy to use. User interface built for anyone. Allows debit card purchases. One of the most popular exchanges (high liquidity!). Insured Bitcoin deposits are also available.

Coinbase Cons

Coinbase only has access to major coins, no ALT coins yet (more on these assets later). Also, Canada and Australia sign ups must use an additional exchange in order to SELL their purchases made through Coinbase. The option to sell was offered in Canada in 2015, but in July 2016, announced it would be stopping services in August after the closure of their Canadian online payments provider Vogogo.

Coinbase Investor Level

Coinbase Referral Program

The referral program is also great. Both you, the new sign up, and the referrer, benefit. After accepting the referral invite, you will get an addition $10 USD in BTC when you make a $100USD purchase of bitcoin, ethereum, or litecoin, and $10 in BTC will also be kicked back to referrer. The invite says just Bitcoin, but Coinbase is actually advertising the referral program for all of bitcoin, ethereum, and litecoin, so the choice is yours.

A pretty good bonus for anyone looking to get started!

You can use my link here to get started (appreciate the ten bucks by the way!)

And once you are signed up,

After you sign up and make your first $100 purchase, you should see this pop up if you used my link.

Nice - it was a pleasure introducing you!

You can then get your link to share with your friend, and grab a few coins for spreading the love. A fun way to get into cryptocurrencies for sure. It's how I got started. Now I'm writing things like this and helping people - good times!

Coinbase Cryptocurrency Send, Wallet Transfer

Send cryptocurrencies via Coinbase.

You also may want to transfer your cryptocurrencies from coinbase to another wallet address. This is very simple to do. Just tap on one of the currencies you are holding on coinbase and look for the 'Send' icon on the top right corner of your phone screen. It looks like a paper plane. Just copy and paste the recipient address and send your coins to the new destination wallet. This part is sometimes hard, if you need help with this, just email me.

Coinbase Security

Coinbase is considered to the one of the safest digital currency exchanges on top of being the world’s largest. A serious team of investors have employed the latest technology to secure Coinbase BTC housing. A photo I.D. is also required if you are purchasing with a credit card. Remember, this is to protect you by preventing fraud.

Coinbase Customer Service

Because Coinbase services the most users worldwide, and invariably, the most traffic, customer service has received some mixed reviews. For those that DO eventually end up getting through, be sure that you will be receiving world class customer relations from one of the best financial exchanges available for access.

Personal Rating on Coinbase

Coinbase is getting 9 out of 10 from me because it's just that easy to use (I'm big on user experience). And the overall Coinbase community support is simply outstanding. You are genuinely working with people who want to see the blockchain ecosystem grow. Had Coinbase supported coin sales in both Canada and Australia, this would be a 10/10 platform.

Coinsquare is based out of Toronto (Yaaaaa!), Ontario, and is Canada’s leading exchange for crypto assets such as bitcoin, ethereum, and other popular digital currencies.

Their mission statement focuses around making access to digital currencies easy, safe, and secure. The exchange is 100% Canadian owned and operated while also being built on the same technology as the New York Stock Exchange. Since its birth in 2015, Coinsquare has never lost a coin. Their transaction ledger is also managed over 2300 times per day! This ensures that they know where every single coin, whether bitcoin or ethereum, is at all times. That is pretty cool to be honest.

Coinsquare also beat Coinbase to the punch when adding popular Alt Coin, Ripple (XRP), to its exchanges. A big step forward for the health of both organizations, as well as the proliferation of the Alt Coin ecosystem.

Coinsquare Funding/Payment Methods and Fees

There are a few ways you can go about funding your Coinsquare account. Again, these exchanges are trying to show you how easy it is to gain access to these decentralized markets.

  • $100 min - $3000 max

  • 0.5% Fee, 0-3+ Days Processing

  • Photo I.D. and Address verification required.

Coinsquare Trading Fees

Coinsquare also does not charge for holding your coins, most exchange platforms don’t, a little different from banks don't you think? Funding the account and transfers is where most fees are found, but entirely depend on the type of funding method or volume of transfer - again this is due more to the overall mining community and is simply the cost of doing business in digital currency. See the details in withdrawal limits below.

More importantly though, Coinsquare trading fees are the lowest of any other major platform available right now. With costs only ranging from 0.1% to 0.4%, this Canadian exchange is world class competitor for investors and traders of all experience.

Coinsquare Withdrawal Limits and Wait times

As with all exchanges, 24 hour withdrawal limits are put into effect in order to ensure market liquidity. We are at the beginning of a very brand new financial landscape, and so controlling the flow of liquidity into and out of it’s infrastructure is paramount. Coinsquare Canadian withdrawal limits are as follows.

Interac E-Transfer

  • $100 min - $2000 max
  • 5% Fee, Unknown processing time (due to high traffic)
  • ID verification required.

Direct Bank Deposit

  • $100 min - $9000 max
  • 1% Fee, 1-9 Days processing time
  • Void Cheque verification required.

Wire Transfer

  • $10,000 min - $1,000.000 max
  • 0.5% Fee, 1-9 Days processing time
  • Void Cheque verification required.

Coinsquare Currencies (and Wallets)Available

  • Bitcoin
  • Bitcoin Cash
  • Ehtereum
  • Dash
  • Dogecoin
  • Litecoin
  • Canadian Dollar
  • British Pound
  • Euro
  • Australian Dollar
  • Gold Bars
  • Silver Bars
  • Silver Coins
  • Squarecoin

Coinsquare acts more as a foreign currency exchange along side a digital currency exchange rather than simply buying different coins to hold in the alternate universe of cryptocurrencies. This platform allows users quick entry and exit on their positions if they see opportunity in a specific coin, a specific currency, or even a precious metal, at a moments notice.

Coinsquare Supported Countries

Coinsquare’s focus is Canadian clientele but services are provided across the globe.

Coinsquare Mobile App Available

Yes, another great mobile App. Although a little more involved than the Coinbase app, there are more currencies to buy and sell, the Coinsquare App provides another frictionless experience for new investors and traders.

More than just cryptocurrencies are available.

Coinsquare User Interface

Another very straightforward interface. The exchanges have made purchasing so simple, all you really need to know is how to read to make a trade. And even if you didn't, you could still probably buy some ethereum. Remember, this is a brand new market, so delicate exchanges are being rammed with amazing amounts of traffic. Everything has to be as efficient and as clean as possible. This is a lot of money we are talking about here.

Desktop version allows advanced trading.

Simple tap and purchase interface.

Coinsquare Trade Difficulty

VERY LOW (Similar difficulty to coin base - basically none!)

Coinsquare Special Feature

Set limits for your buy and sell orders! A great tool for more advanced traders that want to get exact pricing on their transactions. Access to FIAT exchanges also gives some comfort to investors who want to exchange their bitcoin or ethereum for cash, hold it in the account, and then withdraw at a later date. Differentiating itself from Coinbase by taking your involvment to the next level, Coinsquare allows you to have a full rounded portfolio. You can also hedge with gold and silver if you are feeling sophisticated.

Coinsquare Pros

Very easy to use application, with the lowest fees in the world. There is also "Coinsquare Wealth" level service for deposits greater than $25,000 - this is premium level service where you get your own account manager to help you manage your digital assets. Coinsquare is also into adding Alt Coins to the exchange, with the most recent confirmation being Ripple, XRP, sometime in 2018.

Sending and recieving currency to your Coinsquare wallet address is simple.

Coinsquare Cons

Some people have complained about wait times for their withdrawals or transactions fees on transfers. I’ll just have to keep reminding them that this is a necessary cost of conducting business on the blockchain, the miners determine much of the speed and costs of transactions.

Other than being VERY Canadian focussed, this only applies if you aren’t from Canada, Coinsquare is an A+ platform.

Coinsquare Investor Level

Coinsquare Referral Program

Coinsquare also has a solid referral program. You get $20 when you make your first purchase of $60 or more on the exchange using a referral link. The great thing is that the person who uses your link also gets $20, so you both basically net $40 bucks for nothing!

So if you do decide to use Coinsquare, you can use my link and we’ll both get a twenty as soon as you start. I appreciate it in advance. I’m like your digital currency butler, a little tip here and there is certainly welcome. It keeps me writing more content for you guys and gals, again if you have any questions about platforms for currencies, email me - I typically respond the same day.

Here is the link:

Coinsquare Security

Coinsquare is built on the same technology as the New York Stock Exchange. The system they use is 100% proprietary and has been stressed testing for distributed denial of service (DDos) in order to ensure functionality during times of high traffic from multiple sources. Two factor authentifiation (2FA) is also available for the more ironclad prone.

Coinsquare Customer Service

Although some of the wait times may cause users who are learning the platform to become impatient. The customer service of Coinsquare is surprisingly strong. Strong enough where even the CEO himself will intervene for smaller inquiries where service is concerned. A very strong demonstration that Coinsquare truly does care about it’s customers.

Personal Rating on Coinsquare

Coinsquare gets a solid 9/10 from me because it gives you access and control over your digital and FIAT assets like no other exchange. You can carefully navigate the movement in price for both cryptos and FIAT by holding the movers and shipping everything else, all in one place. A great application for pro traders.

Last but definitely not least, I introduce to you...

Right now Binance is the fastest growing exchange for digital currencies trading across the globe.

Often recognized as the exchange with access to the most Alt Coin cryptocurrencies (coins that are not Bitcoin, and most likely built off of the ethereum blockchain), Binance segways away from the beginner level exchanges and gives investors access to the greater spectrum of coins available on the blockchain.

A LOT of difference Alt Coins are traded on Binance.

Built in China, their team has experience on both Wall Street and birthing successful financial start-ups. The underlying platform powering Binance has already been deployed to 30+ exchanges and supports all devices as well as multiple languages. While processing 1.4 million orders per second, Binance is not only the fastest growing exchange on the market, it is also THE fastest exchange on the market.

Binance Funding/Payment Methods:

You must transfer already existing cryptocurrencies and coins from a wallet you own, to the designated address on the Binance platform . BTC and ETH are popular choices to power Binance. Usually coming from either Coinbase or Coinsquare.

Once you are logged in, click on Funds, and then Withdrawals Deposits.
Scroll down to the currency you are try to deposit into Binance, and then get the wallet address to put into either Coinbase or Coinsquare (which platform the coins are coming from) to send currency to your Binance account.

Binance Trading Fees:

The fees for deposit to the exchange are free. But keep in mind, this exchange is purely purposed for digital currency exchange, there is no FIAT currency anywhere to be found. You must deposit cryptorrencies, such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, in order to take part in trade on the Binance exchange.

The fee for trading is VERY marginal, a simple 0.1% on buy and sell orders - very little compared to other ALT coin exchanges. You can also use their coin BNB (Binance coin) to reduce trade fees by up to 50%.

Binance Withdrawal Limit

50 Bitcoin. This basically means you can fly currency in and out of this exchange as you please. Unless you're itching to get your 51 bitcoin...... then you gotta wait 24 hours.

Yes, but only for Android. Apple users will have to use the web based platform.

Access to Alt Coins on the Ethereum blockchain.

Binance User Interface

There are far more markets than just Bitcoin...

The user interface gets a little more complex from here, for both the mobile app and the web platfor. You are now venturing into the actual living breathing exchange ecosystem housing hundreds of currencies. It becomes very easy to get confused. Again, email me if you have questions.

Binance Trade Difficulty

MEDIUM (requires already owned cryptocurrency on another exchange to be transferred over before trade).

Binance Special Feature

Binance features some the most popular ALTcoins in the world such as TRON (TRX), Ripple (XRP), Verge (XVG), while also fielding some of the highest trading volume everyday. You can be sure to find liquidity in this especially lush digital currency environment. Ethereum and Bitcoin movement through the platform tops $100 million every 24 hours.

Binance Pros

If you are looking to really diversify your digital assets and cryptocurrencies, Binance is for you. Especially popular among speculators, the platformprovides a unique opportunity to access freshly released coins that Binance has recognized and adopted into the currency ecosystem.

Binance Cons

A little bite more complex of a platform, remember there is no FIAT currencies (USD, CDN, EURO). So investors will have to get used to the idea of transferring in and out of wallet in order to convert. You’re getting really deep in the digital now!

Binance Referral Program

Referral programs seem to be the norm for the rise in cryptocurrency campaigns. And Binance is no different, except their offering is not just for getting someone to sign up for an account, Binance will actually reward you with lifetime commissions on all trades (20% of fees) through your unique link. Another amazing way to help grow the Binance community, it’s surging liquidity, and your own digital assets while you are part of this ecosystem.

Binance Security

Binance has just recently implemented changes to it’s security system in order to keep customer funds in tact at all times. The exchange has recently moved to Geetest, a security solutions ranging from man-machine verification to cross-linked interactive security and self-immune systems. Two- factor authentification is available, but with Geetest, Binance has taken security for it’s cryptovestors, to another level.

Binance Customer Service

More mixed reviews from the crypto community on customer service. Aside from having immaculate functionality and seamless access to currencies - Binance experiences an enormous amount of traffic. And as such, experienced wait times for customer service are longer than normal. But it seems once they get to you, they are as good as anyone else. Another common theme amongst reviews I’ve found is that people are confused by the fractional amount of coins shed during trades. This is your trading fee people… for them to be this cheap is what makes Binance one of the most effective, and therefore popular, Alt Coin trading exchanges available now.

Personal Rating on Binance

Binance is getting an 8.5/10 from me here.

I actually want to rate it higher but think that would be unfair to my readers. The steps that need to be taken to transfer either BTC or ETH to your Binance account takes away from a frictionless entry into the crypto world.

But once your digital assets are loaded, you will be experiencing one of the most advanced and futuristic ways to invest and build wealth without needing very much to start.

Again if you need help getting your funds to Binance, just ask me.

I hope you enjoyed this summary of the three prevailing platforms in the cryptocurrency world right now.

Interestingly, not only are new coins coming out everyday, but so are new exchanges to support them.

It takes time for these exchanges to verify and approve new currencies, we are in a brand new era after all.

So if you are part of one exchange and don’t see the coin you want, or have coins on an exchange but do not feel comfortable using it anymore, just relax, and take a chill pill because, all of these people are working very hard to consolidate this amazingly profound new financial landscape.

You just got here early :P

So that is that. You just learned how easy it is to enter the market. If you have questions about anything in this summary, or have questions about anything else to do with digital assets, cryptocurrencies, their exchange platforms, or even blockchain technology in general.

Feel free to hit me up!

I’m always open for a conversation, that's how we learn.

And with this much disruption happening around the world.

We have to continue learning everyday.

So I will speak to you soon.
